Standard methods of measurement in infrastructure

Surveyors in the civil engineering sector often face several different methods to measure or quantify works. Standard details and specifications vary from rail, to roads, to utilities, etc. But the underlying concern of all these methods is to ensure accuracy and consistency.

This section explores the standard methods of measurement that may be used in infrastructure, including RICS' NRM 2, CESMM4 and others. This is the particular focus, but the section also pays attention to measurement conventions.

Today, while most bills of quantities are produced using proprietary software packages, a thorough knowledge of measurement conventions is essential in order to understand potential problems. A measurement example is also provided.
