Building defects database - Cold water storage systems

Record details

This cold water is still in use and when the washer on the ball valve fails the plumber will have to squeeze their arms into the small gap above the tank or remove it completely. Both options are likely to disturb asbestos fibres creating a hazard for both occupants and the plumber.
Both these tanks in this older cottage had tight fitting lids but that was all. These are poorly supported and uninsulated; it is not surprising the property was deluged with water the following winter.
Somewhere under this wrap of fibreglass loft insulation is a cold water tank and a feed and expansion tank to a large detached house built in the early 1980s. Although this insulation is better than nothing, it does not match current standards and so will be vulnerable to freezing.
