Building defects database - Calcium silicate: cracking

Record details

Quite severe diagonal cracking has occurred because of restrained shrinkage in the calcium silicate brickwork of this wall. Note the different panel sizes below, to the side and above the window. At some stage, a movement joint has been cut into the brickwork, just discernible as a pale vertical joint equidistant between the window and the left hand return.
Diagonal shrinkage cracking here has resulted from the unequal sizes of different panels of calcium silicate brickwork and the failure to provide a slip plane.
