Biography

Alan started working in an architectural office, qualifying as an architectural technologist in 1980. He later trained to become a building surveyor and worked for local authorities before entering private practice. He qualified as a Chartered Surveyor in 1986 and become a Fellow in 2009.

In 1992 he started work for a firm of loss adjusters, qualifying as a loss adjuster himself in 2000. Then in 2008 he moved to the RICS to take up the position of Associate Director of the Built Environment. 

He is currently responsible for the Building Surveying and Building Control Professional Groups, together with the Dilapidations and Insurance Forums. He also manages numerous Working Groups including Asbestos, Flooding and Health & Safety Advisory Group. Alan sits on the Building Surveying and Building Control Journal editorial groups and the International Advisory Board, Centre for Floods, Communities and Resilience (CFCR).

Alan is the representative on the Defra property level protection (PLP) project and was part of the drafting group for BSI PAS 1188-2014 for PLP. Additionally, he is also involved in the BSI drafting group for BS 85500-2015, a guide to improving the flood performance of buildings.
