Heritage and conservation

This section aims to set out a clear, comprehensive and conservation-led approach to managing change within historic buildings. It examines the various additional aspects to consider when starting work on historic structures or sites with a view to providing a ‘toolkit’ of information.

This section attempts to define heritage and conservation. It outlines why we conserve and what is extraordinary about the historic built environment of the UK. It also describes UK legislation and policy and goes through the different aspects of obtaining the relevant consents. Key to the approach described is gaining and using knowledge of a site's or building's heritage, and an extensive list of resources is provided to aid this.

This section is maintained by Robyn Sparkes of the National Trust.
