Trees and TPOs

Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs) are intended to prevent damage to, or destruction of, trees and to bring any authorised work to trees under planning control. Their objective is not to prevent all work, but to protect the amenity provided by the tree.

If correctly applied by the local planning authority (LPA), TPOs should not prove a restriction on proper tree management. There are rights of appeal against decisions taken by the LPA, and provisions for compensation for loss or damage consequent upon refusal of consent, as well as heavy penalties for contravention.
