Standard methods of measurement in infrastructure
Unlike surveyors in the building sector, those in civil engineering are often faced with a number of different methods to measure or quantify works with. Standard details and specifications vary from rail to roads or utilities, etc. The underlying concern of all these methods, however, is to ensure accuracy and consistency.
This section explores the standard methods of measurement that may be used in infrastructure, including RICS NRM2, CESMM4 and others. Although this is the particular focus, attention is also paid to measurement conventions. Today, while the majority of bills of quantities are produced using proprietary software packages, a thorough knowledge of measurement conventions is essential in order to understand potential problems. A measurement example is also provided.
