Summary
The purpose of building control, as set out by the government, is to help ensure that all relevant building work accords with the government's objectives of securing the health and safety of building users, promoting energy efficiency and making access easier for disabled people. Control is now mostly enforced through the Building Regulations. The current Regulations are the Building Regulations 2000, which came into force on 1 January 2001. The purpose of this chapter is to explain the background to building control in England and Wales, outline the current legislation, and provide a practical guide to actions under the systems in operation today.
